What is a saline pool and how does it work?

A saline pool is a type of pool that uses common salt (sodium chloride) dissolved in water, which goes through a process of salt electrolysis to generate chlorine automatically. This system eliminates the need to add chemical chlorine directly, offering a smoother bathing experience, without strong odors or irritation to the eyes or skin.

The salt chlorinator, a key component of the system, transforms salt into sodium hypochlorite, an effective disinfectant that keeps the water clean and free of microorganisms. Once disinfected, chlorine turns back into salt, completing an ecological and economic cycle.

In addition to being more natural, saline pools require different maintenance than traditional pools, especially with regard to salinity, pH, and chlorinator condition.

How to maintain a saline pool

Saltwater pool maintenance is essential to enjoy crystal clear and healthy water all year round. Although the electrolysis system automates part of the process, there are several aspects that must be reviewed regularly to ensure its proper operation.

In summer

During the hot months, heavy use and high temperatures increase chlorine consumption and water evaporation. To keep a saline pool in optimal condition in summer, it is advisable to:

Monitor salinity with a digital meter to ensure levels are between 4 and 6 g/l, as specified by the chlorinator manufacturer.
Check and clean the salt chlorinator, especially the electrodes, to prevent limescale build-up and ensure efficient chlorine production.
Adjust the pH between 7.2 and 7.6 with our pH corrector for salt electrolysis. An unbalanced pH affects the effectiveness of the chlorine generated by the system.
Prevent algae from forming, especially if the pool is exposed to the sun for many hours. Use an anti-algae compatible with saline systems.
Cover the pool when not in use to prevent excessive water evaporation and protect it from dirt.

In winter

Knowing how to maintain a saline pool in winter is key to extending the life of the system and avoiding problems in the low season:

Reduce filtration hours according to water temperature (1 hour of filtration per 10°C is recommended).
Apply a winterizing product compatible with saline pools to prevent the proliferation of algae and bacteria during the months of inactivity.
Periodically check salt and pH levels, even if use is minimal. This prevents water breakdown and corrosion of equipment.
If possible, completely cover the pool with a winter cover to protect it from inclement weather.

Common Mistakes in Maintaining a Saline Pool

Although the maintenance of saline pools is simpler in many aspects, there are frequent mistakes that can compromise the quality of the water and damage the system:

Not checking the salinity regularly. Low salinity prevents the chlorinator from generating chlorine, and too much can deteriorate the components.
Neglecting to clean the chlorinator electrodes, which reduces their efficiency and shortens their service life.
Using chemicals that are not compatible with saline systems, such as anti-algae with copper or traditional chlorine in large quantities.
Failure to control pH, which affects the effectiveness of chlorine produced by electrolysis and can lead to scale or corrosion.
Leaving the pool untreated during the winter, which causes green water, accumulated dirt and a difficult start in spring.

Avoiding these errors is simple if you keep a regular check on the system and use the right products.
